Chain Smokers - Could This Be Your Lifeline?

By Mike Singh

There are several stop smoking aids, the most common being pharmaceutical aids, acupuncture, nicotine patches, hypnosis, herbal cigarettes, self-help groups, and clinics. But truth be known, if a person does not have any will or determination to quit smoking, all these aids are completely worthless and will not do a thing. On the other hand, if a person does have a sincere desire to quit, each aid has the potential to be of help. Additionally, self-help clinics encourage smokers to use their will power to give up smoking. They teach smokers several mind exercises to reduce cravings for cigarettes. Success rates may not be very high but several chain smokers have benefited from these clinics, whose aim is to make individuals stronger, both mentally and emotionally.

The popular pharmaceutical aids are nicotine replacement therapy, with some being combined with the drug, Zyban. The principle behind nicotine replacement therapy is to slowly reduce the dependence on nicotine-rich cigarettes by giving the body small doses of nicotine. This reduces emotional distress and cuts down on withdrawal symptoms. This type of therapy is given in the form of gums, patches, tablets, nasal sprays, and inhalers that contain lower amounts of nicotine than cigarettes. The drug, Zyban, breaks the smoking habit by dulling the nicotine sensors that are present in the brain. Verenicline too stops the nicotine sensors from being stimulated, thereby nullifying the pleasurable effects obtained through smoking a cigarette. Studies show that there is a significantly higher rate of smokers quitting if wearing the nicotine patch in combination with the drug, Zyban. Studies also show that smokers treated with Zyban had higher rates than those wearing the patch alone. However, smokers who are suffering from hypertension or epilepsy should not take this drug. All smokers should take it under medical supervision only.

There are alternative methods being used with success. Acupuncture and acupressure are other methods that are used to stop smoking. Both of these Oriental methods stimulate the release of endorphins. Endorphins are natural painkillers that create a sense of well-being and lower the dependence on cigarettes. The advantage of these aids is that they do not cause any side effects. Another option is to smoke cigarettes that contain herbal ingredients. This may reduce dependence on smoking but can also cause side effects because they contain high levels of tar and carbon monoxide.

A stop smoking aid that is becoming quite popular is the LLLT, or low-level laser therapy. This is a "cold" pure laser light that has been used in England, Canada, and Europe for over 20 years, that is painless and safe. Many people like it because it is medication-free with no side effects. It was previously used for other conditions, such as musculoskeletal injuries, before being used as a stop smoking aid. It is also being used for addictions and weight control. The areas of the body that are stimulated to stop smoking are the ears, face, and hands; weight loss triggers are the same, but also stimulated are the legs, feet, and torso.

Anit-Smoking Posters

By Eric Hartwell

It is obvious that most people remember what their eyes come across. Somehow, the sense of sight has been a far more effective medium when it comes to making the human remember thoughts and ideas. As such, it has been utilized by concerned citizens and groups in order to promote their battle against smoking.

Everywhere in the world, anti smoking posters are being manufactured and syndicated to battle the smoking habit. They come in all shapes and sizes in all colors and styles. However, there are certain features of anti smoking posters that can be observed. These trends are based on researched techniques and ideas which may be useful in discouraging people from smoking, and motivating them to quit the dreadful habit.

As usual health related anti smoking posters lead the pack when it comes to this kind of campaign. The most popular among these is called The Human Smokers Anatomy. This depicts the body of a smoker after too many cigarettes. It is a clear and effective way of showing that almost every part of the body may get vitally damaged with one too many cigarettes. In fact, this poster has been placed in most medical institutions in order to discourage patients from smoking any more. Other common designs you may see on anti smoking posters are tattered lungs and hospitalized smokers. The common theme among them is the foreboding feel of a damaged body any smoker to will one day obtain without fail.

Anti smoking posters concerning second hand smoke also abound. These are posters which depict pregnant women and children who suffer the harsh effects of cigarettes, even if they do not smoke. As you may well know, second hand smoke is truly harmful for those who inhale it. Through these posters, everyone gains the opportunity to grasp the fact that air is a shared commodity among all people. Most posters tackling this issue come with a call. A popular one is Do not violate our right to breathe, a slogan spoken from a childs perspective. These kinds of campaign propaganda is perhaps the most popular when it comes to gaining support.

Even religious posters against smoking are made and posted everyday. These carry messages which say that smoking can harm the temple of Christ, which happens to be the human body. At times, these posters also carry concerns for pregnant women who may harm children and kill or distort life due to their addiction to smoking. Anti smoking posters of this note often come with a dramatic and non graphic feel. They often aim to appeal to emotional and spiritual aspects of a person.

Indeed, there are innumerable anti smoking posters posted everywhere in the world. All that needs to be done is to take a look around now and to notice the knowledge these posters are trying to impart. After that, everyone should give these ideas ample thought and finally decide to quite smoking once and for all.

How Your Body Heals When You Quit Smoking

By Monalisa Hyden

As a smoker, you must be tired of hearing all those free of cost advices from your well- wishers, Quit sweetheart! Smoking isnt doing any good to you. You must be wondering, Havent all the years of smoking or chewing already caused enough damage for you to quit and derive any benefit now? Not at all! Let me tell you that if you really go deep into the matter and check the benefits of quitting then I am sure you will at least try to stop smoking.

What happens inside our bodies when we quit smoking or any type of tobacco use? The human body is amazingly resilient. Within the first 20 minutes of quitting, the healing process begins. Quit smoking benefits will continue to improve your health and quality of life for years.

It takes courage to put down that last cigarette. When you quit smoking, the benefits begin within minutes of your last cigarette. At 20 minutes after quitting your blood pressure decreases, pulse rate drops, body temperature of hands and feet increases. Then within 8 hours of smoking the last cigarette carbon monoxide level in blood drops to normal, oxygen level in blood increases to normal. Next 24 hours your chance of a heart attack decreases, and at 48 hours, nerve endings start re-growing, ability to smell and taste improves!

Between 2 weeks and 3 months after you have quit smoking, blood circulation improves, walking becomes easier and lung function increases.

Between 1 to 9 smoke free months, you may notice significant improvements in problems like coughing, sinus congestion, fatigue, shortness of breath.

When you complete 1 year smoke free, excess risk of coronary heart disease is decreased to half that of a smoker. Quitting tobacco is the absolute best thing you can do for your heart and for your health overall.

Imagine what happens when you remain smoke free from 5 to 15 years? Stroke risk is reduced to that of people who have never smoked. After 10 smoke free years, the risk of lung cancer drops to as little as one-half that of continuing smokers, risk of cancer of the mouth, throat, esophagus, bladder, kidney, and pancreas decreases, risk of ulcer decreasesAnd finally after 15 years of quitting smoke the risk of coronary heart disease is now similar to that of people who have never smoked and also the risk of death returns to nearly the level of people who have never smoked.

Remember, you have many reasons for which you can quit smoking at any point of time. But developing the will to quit and decide a quit date is really crucial. It is rare indeed for a smoker to really ever be "ready" for their quit date. Smokers are addicts, and addicts are controlled by the substance they're addicted to. Don't wait for the stars to align and conditions to present themselves perfectly, because if you do, you'll never quit smoking. Quit smoking today!

The author, Monalisa Hyden, addresses psychological and health related issues. If you wish to help yourself and your loved ones in http://www.chantixhome.com for more information and advice.

Hogs, Cigarettes & Dependency

By Dr Bob Wilkerson

1 Cor 6: 12 All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any.

I started smoking when I was 15 years old. This article is not about cigarettes and the evils thereof. If you want to smoke, go ahead and do whatever floats your boat. My point is I started smoking, at a young age, thinking I was only going to smoke for a little while. For sure, I thought I would quit before I suffered in long-term damage. If someone had told me, I would smoke for forty years I would have laughed in his or her face. I was to smart to let cigarettes trap me. Well, Forty years pasted, I finally did quit and as far as I know I dont have any long term damage, like cancer or lung disease but I promise, when I started the habit I was, cross my heart and hope to die, going to quit.

Smoking is just one example of how the worlds pleasures, instant gratification, can trap us and take us places, long term pain, we never dreamed we would or could go. If I had the power to go back in time I would have never taken the first cigarette, let alone the first drink, which is another story.

Once upon a time, in the hills of Tennessee, a man and his three sons lived off the land. Most of the time, he and his sons struggled to make ends meet. He planted corn and other vegetables but that just wasnt enough to keep food on the table during the winter months. He hunted and fished but still they came up short of food during the winter.

Wild hogs roamed the hills in this section of Tennessee. However, they were almost impossible to hunt because they were such cleaver animals. They knew when to hide and where to hide. In fact, the hog is one of the smartest animals on earth. Anyway, the man wanted the hogs and he wanted to trapped them not kill them. If he trapped them, he would have them for food any time he and his sons needed them.

One evening after a long hard day tilling the soil, planting water melons, corn, okra, and a bunch of other tasty, southern vegetable, (gosh it makes my mouth water for some good southern fried okra, chicken and black eyed peas) the man and his sons began to devise a plan to catch the wild hogs. One son said, Why dont we just set out some poison and catch them that way. Dummy that would kill them and how can we eat a dead, poisoned hog. The other son jumped to his feet and yelled out, I know what we can do.

The father and the other son leaped to their feet out of fear. The yell of the boy scared both of them half to death. What are you yelling about, The dad roared.

The son said, Dad we can catch those blasted hogs if we feed them.

Feed them, respond his bother.

Yeah, we start feeding the dang things and while they eat we start building a fence around them. The dad scratched his head and said, Well it might work. The next day the boys placed a bucket full of corn in one of their pastures. Sure enough several days later the hogs started eating the corn. The Tennessee boys just kept on feeding those hog and slowly building a fence around the hogs.

After several months, over 100 wild hogs were coming to eat the corn the boys had placed for them. In fact, the hogs didnt have to rummage through the forest for food any more. They became totally dependant on the food the farmers supplied for them. What a mistake.

After several months, the dad and his sons completed the fence and the gate was ready to close. One day, when all the hogs started eating, the boys slipped over and closed the gate. They wild hogs who were so hard to hunt and so difficult to catch were now the prisoners of the Tennessee farmers.

This little hog story is a wonderful example of how we can become dependent on something which in the end will cause us long term pain. Oh, the hogs didnt have to hunt for food anymore; they did find a way to have instant gratification. However, the cost was more than they wanted to pay. They ended up on the dinner table of the Tennessee mountain boys.

What is the solution? How can we avoid the consequences resulting from our search for instant gratification? How can we avoid the results of addiction and dependency on something that could kill us? The verse of scripture at the top of the page is the answer. The bible tells us all things are lawful. In other words, we can do whatever we want and God still loves us. Boy, am I opening a can of worms. Yes, I believe in once saved always save. Dont get caught up on the doctrine just listen to my point for a second. Yes, we can do anything we choose and God loves us but not all things are profitable. Well, smoking, to much drinking and other things like over eating sure aint profitable. And, yes I am going to leave aint in the sentence. Remember all things are lawful even in English. My point is if we do not want to have the addiction of smoking, alcohol etc., dont start. Dont put the things to your lips. I know the hogs never planned to become food for the Tennessee mountain boys. I never planned on smoking for 40 years but I did. If you do not want to be trapped dont start something, (smoking, drinking, adultery, etc.) you might want to stop at a later date.

If you are trapped, like the hogs, and the gate has closed, I suggested you find some help. My help came from the Lord and He worked for me. Today, I am free from addiction and you can be too.

Cough,...Snort...Spit... Smoking is STILL the Problem

By DiAnne Arnette, M.Ed.

SMOKING IS STILL THE PROBLEM that is plaguing our homes, schools, workplaces, and our environment. It increases our cost of health care, reduces our lives, and creates health problems for non-smoking members of our families or co-workers. In addition, a fact that is rarely mentioned, the psychological issues that are attached to the addictions of tobacco products are many. In short this problem, while still mainly an individual and family matter, is one that is impacting the quality of life all over the world.

Statistics show that smoking is still on the increase in our schools. Adults, even when encouraged to stop the habit by physicians, dentists and other healthcare professionals, have less than a 50% chance of stopping their habits. Again, certainly the physical addiction is strong, but the psychological addiction may be the strongest reason for the failure to stop.

The monetary costs of a pack of cigarettes or a tin of smokeless tobacco have risen to a range of $3.50 to $6.00. Do the math. You can see what the cost is in dollars to a family with maybe 2 smokers. (Very often there is more than one smoker in a family.) Just one pack a day at $4.00 times 365 days equals $1460 per year. Multiply that by 2,3 or more people in a family and they could have lived in a much nicer home, driven a nice, new car, or paid the tuition for a child. This line of thought can continue forever.

There are products at most home improvement centers that must have been developed with smokers in mind. Ash trays that cover the ashes, air purifiers that clean

Now enters the new idea, most recently in the news this spring. Companies are exercising the right to dictate that their employees cannot smoke on the job or at work. Now it gets sticky...a company decided that it would not allow smoking either on or off the job. They do not want to insure smokers and as a cost cutting method like purchasing any other product, they feel justified in eliminating anyone from their company who is a smoker. This idea was discussed time and time again on the talk shows across America recently. Whether or not it is impeding U.S. citizen's rights, it is being tested. And, the truth is, SMOKING is a big problem.

So what are the possible answers? As a counselor working with psychiatric patients for more than 10 years, I have observed the addiction cycles and how they are integrated with all other aspects of personality. I have observed patients using patches, gums, other drugs, counseling, hypnosis, and cold turkey methods. Some of these work for some of the people, but non have worked for all easily. About 10 years ago, I developed a program and have tested it with friends, coworkers, and clients in counseling. I would be the last to say that it is magic. But the reality is that this program has gotten a very positive response from 90% of all who have used it.

The Multiple Factor 24/48/72 Stop Smoking Program is the program and it is rooted in Behavior Theory. The smoker did not learn to like cigarettes the first try, but rather learned to like them. This program teaches the smoker to not like and not depend on cigarettes over time. It works in a gradual way and lets the client be in charge of the time it takes to quit. I developed the program to include most of the positive features of many methods to overcome addiction. While I am still testing the program and making a few changes, it is almost ready for marketing to groups, individuals, and corporations who may want to use it as incentives for employees.

It is my deepest desire to make a real difference on this issue and to help our world become a healthier place for all.

Quit Smoking Methods An Alternative Perspective

By Paul MacIver

A cigarette is a pipe with a fire at one end and a fool at the other said Dr. Johnson in his sarcastic comment on cigarettes and smoking.

Smoking is in fact a pernicious craving for tobacco products, especially cigarettes and cigars.

An organic compound, nicotine, which is richly found in tobacco smoke, is very detrimental to your health. It is linked with various health risks. It can cause diseases of the cardiovascular system, myocardial infarction (heart attack), stroke, diseases of the respiratory tract such as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) chronic bronchitis and emphysema, cancer (particularly lung cancer and cancers of the larynx and tongue), peripheral vascular disease, birth defects of pregnant smokers' offspring, Buerger's disease (thromboangiitis obliterans), impotence, and in some cases it may develop cataracts that may cause blindness.

The statement One thousand Americans stop smoking every day - by dying ironically expresses the risks of smoking.

Sooner or later, everyone stops smoking. Major health risks can be minimized by cessation smoking. Smoking cessation means to quit smoking, but the cardinal point is how to quit smoking.

Smoking can be quitted by using nicotine-containing tobacco substitutes. Nicotine replacement therapy has been quite an effective treatment. It uses various other nicotine delivery methods to replace nicotine obtained from smoking or other tobacco usage. The nicotine patch, inhaler, nasal spray, gum, gel, and lozenge are some effective tools of NTR. Nicotine gum is a chewing gum, which delivers nicotine to the body.

Nicotine patches are also used to quit smoking. Nicotine patches are transdermal patches that release nicotine into the skin. The patch therapy has been considerably successful in helping many people quit.

Hypnosis Stop-Smoking programs are another alternative that can help people who seriously want to quit.

Quit smoking help with hypnosis involves consultations and sittings with a hypnotherapist, who generally squeezes out the reasons for ones smoking and the reasons for wanting to quit. Various hypnotherapy techniques, positive affirmations, and suggestions, are used to help the patient undertake a change of mindset and therefore quit smoking. Tools like stop smoking tapes or CDs are provided to the patient. Quit smoking hypnosis therapy is also proving to be a great quit smoking support.

The best way to quit smoking is to develop a strong will power to want to quit smoking. People who have weak will power cannot quit smoking. Weak will power can make even the effective therapies useless.

James I of England expressed his hate for smoking while he quoth, A custom loathsome to the eye, hateful to the nose, harmful to the brain, dangerous to the lungs, and in the black, stinking fume thereof nearest resembling the horrible Stygian smoke of the pit that is bottomless.

Smoking is not only injurious to health but rather to society also. It should be eradicated as early as possible.

Paul MacIver writes articles on a variety of topics. For further information on successful stop smoking methods visit How to Quit Smoking You may freely reprint this article as long as nothing is changed, this resource box is included and all links are intact.

Stop Smoking - The Aftermath

By Michael Russell

Initially, when you stop smoking, you'll probably be preoccupied with just not giving up the idea of giving up and running down to your local shop for a packet of cigarettes. Next comes the phase where giving up has lost its novelty value and you're getting really fed up.

Unfortunately, one of the problems of giving up is what to do with your hands when you're not actually using them for something useful. You may be tempted to chew your nails - don't do it - that's another habit that's hard to kick; you may be tempted to eat - more on that later; you could carry Arab "fiddle beads" with you, but the most constructive thing you can do is take up a hobby.

If you feel at a loss without something in your hands, why not put them to good use. There are plenty of hobbies which require both dextrous hands and serious concentration, both of which will take your mind off not having a cigarette. If you want something to do while watching TV, there are jigsaws, crochet and knitting or sewing, none of which will interfere with your viewing pleasure. If you like to sit in front of the television but don't really watch it, why not try crossword or other puzzles or the latest craze Sudoku? That will really keep you occupied for hours.

Better still, don't watch TV, it's probably a bit too close to the kitchen, so try something that will take you into the garden, or the garage, or away from the house altogether. There's an endless list of things you could do such as woodwork, metalwork, sketching and painting, fishing and a variety of other sports.

If you're using one or several of the nicotine alternatives but you're still tempted to eat as a substitute for smoking, try to choose something healthy. Keep carrot or celery sticks in the fridge with some cottage cheese. Have low fat, low sugar biscuits in the tin, or nibble on cheese (but only in moderation). If that doesn't work, try to split up your normal food intake into several smaller meals, so that you have something to look forward to more often during the day. In any event, the majority of people trying to give up smoking put on a little weight. Some attribute it to decreased metabolic rate and some just to over-eating, but either way, don't worry too much about it at this stage, unless you experience significant weight gain. Of course another counter-measure is to take more exercise - go for a brisk walk or visit the gym.

Finally, you make have a cough for up to three months. This will probably make you wonder why you bothered to quit smoking in the first place, but be patient, it's just the body's way of clearing out all the impurities including tar, that you've stored in your lungs over all those years of puffing away.

That's the bad news, but in our next article will come the good.
